Jewellery Care Guide
A little care at home keeps your jewellery looking the way it did on the day you chose it.
Put on last, take off first
Dress, style your hair and apply perfume before you put jewellery on.
Store separately
Use a soft pouch or a lined box so pieces do not scratch each other.
Remove for workouts
Sweat, chlorine and impact are hard on settings and finishes.
Get a yearly check
Visit a store to have clasps, claws and chains inspected and polished.
Gold
- Soak in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 15 minutes, then brush gently with a soft toothbrush.
- Rinse in clean water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Do not use bleach or chlorine cleaners.
- Keep gold away from perfume, hairspray and chemicals, and take it off before swimming or cleaning.
Diamond
- A soak in warm soapy water brings back the sparkle. Lotion and oils are what usually make a diamond look dull.
- Brush behind the stone, where dirt collects, then rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth.
- Check claws and settings once a year. A loose stone is much easier to fix before it falls out.
Silver
- Wear it often: skin oils help keep silver bright. Wipe with a soft dry cloth after each wear.
- Store in an airtight pouch with an anti-tarnish strip. Humidity and air are what darken silver.
- Use a silver polishing cloth for tarnish. Avoid rubbing hard on oxidised or textured designs.
Pearls and gemstones
- Pearls and softer stones should only be wiped with a damp soft cloth. Never soak them or use ultrasonic cleaners.
- Put pearls on after perfume and make-up, and restring them every few years if worn often.
- Keep gemstones out of strong sunlight for long periods, as some colours can fade.
